By default, every email Noctern sends on your behalf — ticket confirmations, reminders, receipts, hold and group-sale notices, and marketing campaigns — comes from Noctern's own address with your venue name shown as the sender. Registering your own domain switches every one of those emails over to your address instead, so patrons see your domain in their inbox.

What you'll need

You don't need any technical skill to turn this on, but you do need access to whoever manages DNS for your domain (often your web host or IT provider) to add a few records afterward. Nothing about your existing website or email changes — this only affects mail Noctern sends on your behalf.

Turning it on

Go to AdminVenues[venue]Edit and scroll to the Email sending card.

  1. Enter Your domain — the domain your venue already uses, e.g. yourvenue.org.
  2. Enter a From name (how your venue's name appears to patrons, e.g. "Your Venue") and a From address (the part before the @, e.g. "tickets").
  3. Optionally enter a Reply-to address — where patron replies land. Leave it blank to use your venue's event email.
  4. Click Register domain.

Noctern registers the domain with its email provider and shows you a table of DNS records to add — a DKIM record (authenticates mail sent through Noctern) and an SPF record (sets the return path). Give this table to whoever manages your DNS; each row has a copy button for the name and value.

A DMARC record is also shown as a suggestion, starting at the safest setting (p=none, which only monitors and never blocks mail). It's optional and not required for verification — add it if your DNS provider supports it and you want visibility into how your domain's mail is authenticating across the wider internet.

Verifying

DNS changes can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to take effect, depending on your provider. Once you've added the records, click Check verification on the Email sending card. Noctern re-checks the records and updates the status:

  • Verifying — records added, still propagating or not yet checked.
  • Verified — every record checked out. From this point on, every venue email sends from your domain automatically — no further action needed.
  • Failed — one or more records didn't verify. Double-check the values against what's shown (copy-paste, don't retype) and check verification again.

Until your domain shows Verified, venue email keeps sending from Noctern's default domain (with your venue name shown) — nothing breaks or stops sending while you're setting this up.

Once verified, a Send test email to me button appears — use it to confirm delivery end to end before telling your team the switch is live.

Try it yourself

Register a domain you control, add the DNS records shown, and click Check verification. Once it shows Verified, send yourself a test email and confirm the From address matches your domain.
