If your bar or concessions run on Square, Noctern can import your orders and attribute that revenue to the right event — so a show's report shows ticket sales and bar sales together, not just tickets.
Unlike Toast, Square has a proper OAuth flow: there are no credentials to copy anywhere. You click one button and sign in to Square.
First: Noctern records Square as your point of sale
The Point of Sale card only appears on your venue's Edit page once Noctern has recorded which POS your venue runs — and it then shows the controls for that POS only. So the first step is to tell Noctern support you're on Square.
Until that's done there is no Point of Sale card, and the connection is refused on the server even if you reach the authorize link another way. If you switch POS later, tell Noctern support: changing your recorded provider deletes the stored credentials for the old one, so you'll connect the new POS from scratch.
Connecting
- Go to AdminVenues[venue]Edit and open the Point of Sale — Square card.
- In the Square row, click Connect. It opens Square in a new tab.
- Sign in to Square as the account that owns your location, and approve the access Noctern asks for.
- Square sends you back to your venue's Edit page. A green POS connected notice appears on the card: "Square is now linked to this venue. Bar sales will start appearing on event pages."
Once connected, the card shows Connected to Square, whether it is a production or sandbox connection, and the location it is linked to. The Square row reads Connected via OAuth, and its button becomes Reconnect.
If it doesn't work
| What you see | What it means | |---|---| | Authorization declined | You cancelled or declined at Square. Click Connect again | | Connection failed | Something went wrong finishing the handshake, with a short code. Try again; if it keeps happening, tell Noctern support the code |
What Noctern can and cannot do with the connection
Noctern asks Square for read-only access and nothing more — permission to read orders, your merchant profile, and your item catalogue. There is no write permission of any kind in the request.
Noctern never places orders, takes payments, refunds anything, or changes your menu or prices in Square.
Maintaining it
- Test connection re-verifies the link at any time and reports the location name and timezone it can see.
- Disconnect removes it. Noctern stops reading Square data immediately and bar-sales attribution stops until you reconnect; nothing on the Square side is affected. You are asked to confirm first.
- Reconnect runs the same OAuth flow again — use it if you change which Square account or location you want Noctern reading.
What this powers
An event's Bar Sales report pulls everything Square closed during that event's active window and rolls it into gross, net, tax and tip totals plus a top-items breakdown, alongside the event's ticket sales.
The attribution window
Noctern doesn't just count sales between the event's start and end time — bars open before doors and often stay open after the show ends. Lower down the same card, under Sales attribution window:
- Minutes before start (default 60) — how long before the event's start time the window opens
- Minutes after end (default 30) — how long after the event's end time it stays open
If your bar opens earlier or closes later, widen these (0–720 minutes each) so the report captures the sales that really belong to the event, then click Save attribution window.
If two of your events overlap in time, the same bar sales can fall inside both windows. Tighten the offsets on back-to-back nights rather than leaving the generous defaults.
