Lesson 50 of 56

How your venue gets paid — the Payments card

Venue Admin

Go to AdminVenues[venue]Edit and open the Payments card to see how your venue is paid.

There are two arrangements, and the card tells you which one you are on in plain words.

Noctern collects payments (the default)

Noctern is the merchant of record. Buyers' cards are charged by Noctern, Noctern holds the money, and Noctern pays your venue after each event. Noctern receives the 1099-K for those card sales.

What you read: the Payout reconciliation report, which matches each payout to the orders that funded it and shows a Variance column — what you are owed but have not been paid yet. See "Payout reports and reconciliation".

Your own Stripe account

Your venue is the merchant of record. Stripe charges the buyer in your name and deposits ticket revenue directly to your bank; Noctern's service fee is deducted automatically as part of the charge. Stripe issues your 1099-K, not Noctern.

What you read: the Stripe payouts (Connect) report, which shows the payouts Stripe actually made to your bank. The Payout reconciliation report is about Noctern's remittances and is not the one to use once Stripe is paying you directly.

Switching

Switching a venue to its own Stripe account is done by Noctern, not from this card — ask Noctern support. Once they start the process, the Payments card walks you through Stripe's own onboarding (identity, bank account, business details) and shows the status back on the card:

StatusWhat it means
Not startedNo Stripe account exists for your venue yet
OnboardingStripe's form has been opened but not finished
Pending reviewStripe is checking the details you submitted
ActiveDone. Stripe is paying you directly
RestrictedStripe needs more information. The card lists what, with a link into your Stripe dashboard
DisconnectedYour venue is back on Noctern-collected payments

Until the account reaches Active, sales keep running through Noctern as before — nothing is held up while onboarding finishes.

Going back the other way is also Noctern's to do, and it is refused while you have open refunds or a non-zero balance sitting in Stripe. Clear those first. Existing orders already on your Stripe account are never moved; only new orders change hands.

What does not change either way

  • What the buyer pays. Fees and the price on screen are identical under both arrangements.
  • Your own money stays yours. Your delivery fee, your box office fee and your day-of-show upcharge are never part of Noctern's service fee, and never part of what Stripe deducts for Noctern.
  • Cash and check. Those tenders are collected by you at the window under either arrangement, so they never appear in a Stripe payout. Reconcile them through your own records and the daily cash report.
  • Refunds are issued from wherever the money was taken. A refund of an order placed before a switch goes back through the account that charged it.

If there is no Payments card on your Edit page at all, connected Stripe accounts are not switched on for your deployment. Noctern is collecting the money and paying you per event — the default above.

Try it

Open the Payments card for one of your venues and read which arrangement it is on, then open the report the card points you to (Payout reconciliation or Stripe payouts) and confirm it matches.

Checkpoint

Answer all 3 questions correctly to mark this lesson complete.

  1. 1. Under the default arrangement, who is the merchant of record and who receives the 1099-K?

  2. 2. A venue's own Stripe account is Active. Which report should they read for their payouts?

  3. 3. A venue wants to switch back from its own Stripe account to Noctern-collected payments, but has open refunds pending. What happens?
