Lesson 51 of 56

Setting up memberships

Venue Admin

A membership program sells an annual (or any-length) membership at your venue. Members get some mix of free tickets, a standing discount, and whatever else you promise them in the copy.

Every venue can set one up — it is not a module you have to ask for. On the venue hub, the Memberships link under Money is always there; until you create your first level it reads "Set up your first membership level" underneath.

Click Memberships on the hub (or Manage Memberships on the Memberships card of the Edit page) to reach the Membership Program page.

Program details

FieldWhat it is
Program NameWhat the program is called — e.g. "The Grand Arena Fan Club"
Program DescriptionThe pitch. Describe the benefits of joining

One program per venue; the levels below are the tiers inside it.

Membership levels

Click Add Level for each tier, and fill in:

FieldWhat it does
Level Namee.g. Gold
Level DescriptionWhat this level gives
Price ($)What the member pays for the term
Duration (Months)How long the membership lasts
Discount (%)A standing discount on future tickets

The free-ticket fields

Four fields work together. Get them right and you have told Noctern exactly how generous the level is.

FieldWhat it does
Unlimited free ticketsA switch. On means the member gets a free ticket on every eligible seat and the count below is ignored (it is forced to 0 and greyed out)
Free TicketsThe number of free tickets over the whole membership term. Disabled while Unlimited is on
Max Free Ticket Price ($)A cap on a seat's base price for it to qualify. Leave blank for no cap
Max Free Tickets Per EventA cap on how many free tickets one member can take at a single event. Leave blank for no cap

Unlimited free tickets with no Max Free Ticket Price and no Max Free Tickets Per Event means one member can take any number of your best seats, at any price, at every show. Set at least one of the two caps on an unlimited tier.

Use the red trash button at the top right of a level to remove it. Click Save Program at the bottom when you are done.

What members see

Once the program has at least one level, a Become a member button appears on your public venue page. Members manage their own membership from their Noctern profile.

Member benefits apply automatically at checkout and at the box office — a member's free tickets and discount are worked out from their active membership, with no code to type.

A member's free tickets are the membership paying for the seat, not you giving it away. Never record a comp over a member's benefit — the box office refuses it by name, and tells staff to ring it up as a regular sale so the membership covers it.

Deleting the program

Delete Program removes the program and all its levels from your venue. Existing members keep their accounts but can no longer apply benefits. It cannot be undone.

Try it yourself

Create one level — $50, 12 months, 2 free tickets, max $35 per free ticket — and save. Open your public venue page and confirm the Become a member button appears.

Checkpoint

Answer all 3 questions correctly to mark this lesson complete.

  1. 1. A membership level has Unlimited free tickets on, with no Max Free Ticket Price and no Max Free Tickets Per Event set. What's the risk?

  2. 2. A member is entitled to free tickets under their membership. How does that get applied at checkout?

  3. 3. A venue clicks Delete Program on its membership program. What happens to existing members?
