Lesson 49 of 56

Deleting a venue — the Danger Zone

Venue Admin

The Danger Zone card at the very bottom of AdminVenues[venue]Edit permanently deletes a venue and everything scoped to it. You need the Venue settings permission.

This cannot be undone. Events, seating layouts and related data go with the venue. Read the confirmation dialog in full before clicking the second button — it is the only place that tells you exactly what will disappear.

What happens when you click Delete Venue

Noctern does not delete anything straight away. It first scans the venue and shows you what it found:

  1. Click Delete Venue. The dialog opens on Checking "<your venue>"… while it scans for financial records and venue data.
  2. Read what it comes back with — one of the three outcomes below.
  3. Only if it offers Delete Permanently is the venue deletable. Clicking Cancel at any point leaves everything untouched.

"Can't delete … — financial records exist"

If the venue has ever taken money, it cannot be deleted. The dialog names what it found (orders, payments and so on) and there is no delete button at all — only Cancel.

Money records must be kept, so it can't be deleted.

This is the usual answer for any venue that has run a real show. Ask Noctern support to take it offline instead; see "What to do instead" below.

"Delete Venue?"

The venue is deletable. The dialog lists:

  • everything scoped to it that will be permanently deleted, counted by kind,
  • how many stored files go with it (images, PDFs, attachments),
  • and, as separate lines, what is not removed:
LineWhat it means
Not removedResources outside Noctern that you have to clean up yourself
Kept — financial recordsMoney records that survive the delete by design
Kept — audit trailThe venue's activity log, kept so the deletion itself stays accountable

Click Delete Permanently to go ahead.

"Could not check this venue"

The scan failed. Nothing has been deleted and there is no delete button — try again.

What to do instead

Deleting is almost never the right answer for a venue that has sold tickets. Better options:

  • Stop selling — set your events to cancelled or archived. Only active events are visible publicly, so archiving the lot takes the venue out of circulation without touching any record.
  • Take the venue off public listings — ask Noctern support to suspend it. A suspended venue disappears from public listings, and your hub shows a Suspended badge and a banner saying so. Nothing is lost, and it can be undone.
  • Remove people's access — if the real goal is that a former operator can no longer get in, use Team & permissions instead. See "Adding Team Members and Managing Permissions".

Deleting a test venue you created by mistake, before it ever sold anything, is exactly what this card is for. That is about the only time it works.

Try it

Click Delete Venue on a venue that has sold at least one ticket and confirm the dialog reads "Can't delete — financial records exist" with no delete button, then click Cancel.

Checkpoint

Answer all 3 questions correctly to mark this lesson complete.

  1. 1. A venue admin clicks Delete Venue on a venue that has run a real, ticketed show. What's the likely result?

  2. 2. A deletable venue (no financial history) is actually deleted. What survives anyway?

  3. 3. A venue admin really just wants a former employee to lose access — not to delete anything. What should they do instead?
