Cash sales skip Stripe entirely — no card processing fees, and the venue keeps the cash in the drawer instead of Noctern depositing it.
Recording a cash sale
In the Sale tab, select seats or enter a general-admission quantity, then choose Cash.
Enter the amount the patron hands you. The app shows Change due.
Confirm the sale. The ticket is issued immediately — no waiting on a network round-trip to a payment processor.
The QR code shown on the success screen is the guest's ticket. Tap Send Receipt if they want a copy emailed — it isn't sent automatically.
What's different about cash, behind the scenes
A door cash sale is ticket price + tax, and nothing else:
- No Noctern service fee and no credit-card fee — the venue took the money, so Noctern never processed it.
- No box office fee either, even at a venue that charges one on its web box office. The cash is already in the venue's till.
- A promo code still works and still comes off the price before tax.
Sales tax is still calculated and owed on a cash sale — cash isn't tax-free, it's just fee-free. The venue is responsible for the cash it collected; Noctern's reporting shows the ticket but no deposit for it.
Cash sales don't sync to QuickBooks — they're a venue-collected transaction, so there's nothing for Noctern's accounting sync to post.
If the device has a cash drawer session open for its register, the sale is stamped onto that session, so it shows up in the expected-cash figure when the drawer is counted at the end of the night — see Opening and Closing the Cash Drawer.
Refunds
Cash sales are final from the POS app — there's no undo button on the device. To refund one, use the web at AdminEvents[event]Attendees → Refund Ticket → Refund to original payment, and tick Cash / check was returned to the customer once you've physically handed the money back. Box Office staff can do this for up to $100 per ticket; more than that needs a venue admin.
